A looooooong time ago (remember 1980?) we made a button with the Dutch flag on it, with the red dripping onto the blue. It was a sign of the times, one could say, not with a certain Prince (we didn't know the guy) but instead with a princess becoming a queen, the "party" had to take place in a troubled Amsterdam, high unemployment rates, lack of decent and affordable housing (nothing new, right?), and various clashes between squatters and riot-police. The button was cheap and easy to make, we sold thousands of them at cost-price, and some smart fuckers at the local fleamarket made very badly designed copies of the original, and probably made quite a buck because tourists (we kid you not) wanted to have one, too. The original flag-button, meanwhile, was worn by squatters and activists, especially during rougher times, to distinguish the goodies from the baddies.
Anyway, recently we bumped into the old little wooden box in which we kept the various buttons (Svätsox, De Groeten, Destroy Fascism, Rode Wig, verZ, ME weg ermee, plus the regular Ex ones, to name a few) that we sold at the Ex shows at the time. And inside the box we found, to our own surprise, about a hundred leftover dripping-flag buttons.
Original design 1980.
